Grant Description
Description

Good Samaritan Health Services has served the working uninsured in North Mississippi since 1992, providing essential medical care to individuals who cannot afford traditional healthcare. Our mission is to ensure access to life-improving and lifesaving healthcare services, including preventive care, chronic disease management, and urgent care, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

According to local census data, 13% of adults aged 18 to 64 lack health insurance, and this figure increases to nearly 29% among low-income individuals. This represents a significant number of hardworking men and women who are currently uninsured. Individuals who work without insurance often face the difficult choice of prioritizing everyday expenses over accessing essential medications for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Interruptions in medication access can result in severe health complications, hospitalizations, and even death. Currently, our pharmacy resources are insufficient to address this growing need, creating a critical gap in lifesaving care.

This project will expand our pharmacy program to provide essential medications to the working uninsured, with a focus on chronic disease management.

Goals include:

  • Increase the number of patients receiving critical prescriptions by 40% in the first year.
  • Improve adherence to medication regimens and patient health outcomes.
  • Reduce preventable hospitalizations and urgent care visits related to chronic illness.

Funds will be allocated to:

  • Purchase lifesaving medications for chronic illnesses.
  • Expand pharmacy storage and dispensing capabilities.
  • Support pharmacy staffing to manage increased patient volume.
  • Develop patient education and adherence support programs.

Expected Outcomes

  • Over 500 working uninsured patients will receive critical medications in the first year.
  • Improved management of chronic illnesses among clinic patients.
  • Documented reduction in urgent care visits and preventable hospitalizations.

Evaluation Plan

  • Track patients served, medications dispensed, and adherence rates.
  • Monitor patient health outcomes and follow-up visits.
  • Collect patient feedback and satisfaction surveys to assess impact.

Sustainability

The expanded pharmacy program will be sustained through ongoing fundraising, community partnerships, and integration into the clinic’s long-term operations. Support from local pharmaceutical programs and donors will ensure continued access to medications for working uninsured patients.
