| Description | Shortly after Sissy Farenthold’s death in September 2021, a number of family members and friends approached the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice at the University of Texas School of Law, from which Sissy graduated in 1949, to start a memorial fund in her honor. The Sissy Farenthold Fund for Peace and Social Justice will celebrate and continue the legacy of one of the Law School's most distinguished alumni by sponsoring cutting edge academic, advocacy, and creative work on a broad range of issues to which she was committed, with a focus on peace, climate and environmental justice, and reproductive and sexual rights. |
| Used for | Grant funds will be used as a founding gift for the establishment of The Sissy Farenthold Fund for Peace and Justice to be housed at the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center at The University of Texas at Austin. The purpose of the Fund is to support activities in Sissy’s honor, such as engaging in and supporting cutting edge peace and social justice academic and policy research; advocacy; engagement with community partners; creative and artistic production; student internships; and visiting lecturers, scholars, and activists. |
| Benefits | In honor of Sissy Farenthold’s long career, including her grassroots activism, all activities will be aimed at pursuing justice in the areas to which she was committed, with a focus on peace, climate and environmental justice, and reproductive and sexual rights. By supporting and promoting collaborative work, among both academics and activists in the global North and the global South, we will work toward place-based but globally informed and oriented strategies toward addressing injustices. Because many of the activities will involve students—from a number of different institutions around the world—the fund will contribute to the building of the next generation of peace and social justice advocates. |
