Increase access to reading and educational materials for children

The Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation grant would provide books and educational resources for Texans children in Austin or Houston. These materials will be distributed to support students from the most vulnerable backgrounds. By providing access to quality education resources students and families will be empowered to break the poverty cycle, improve their health and employment opportunities and life outcomes.

This grant will be used to set up a program that addresses literacy before 4th grade, since there is substantial research driving our focus to children during this age. The project goals will be based on these key objectives:

1. Increase children’s book ownership by providing suitable and engaging books

2. Lift literacy skills of children from disadvantaged backgrounds

3. Bring a change of attitude and behaviour towards reading

In order to achieve these objectives, the Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation grant will be used to expand the implementation of USA Reads Initiative by increasing free book distribution to children through the following programs:

Book Giving - Distribute 14,000 books for free to children by running three book giving events throughout the year at each of partner schools during the World Book Day, International Literacy Day and Holiday Book Giving. Availability to books over breaks is vital for building literacy growth in children.

Pop-up Libraries - Establish 3 “Pop Up Libraries” in the most needed neighborhoods in Austin or Houston Texas. By partnering with local organizations to host collapsible bookshelves with books that children can take home. All materials will be provided free-of-charge and bookshelves will remain fully stocked.

These programs funded by the grant are a year in length and monitored bi-annually for progress and program evaluation. With support of local organizations families will fill out forms to collect demographic and student participation. Staff will meet with community partners and businesses to bring together a collective force against illiteracy and identify vulnerable communities.
