Fund to Aid Residents: Caring for Indigent and Low-Income Elderly Women

Founded in 1950 by Mrs. Sarah Roberts French, and located near historic Woodlawn Lake, the Sarah Roberts French Home is the oldest continuously licensed nursing facility in Bexar County. Our care home personnel are highly qualified professionals, many of whom are bilingual. As a nursing facility in Texas, we meet the most rigorous industry regulations in the nation.

Our core service is providing 24-7 nursing care are for up to 60 residents at a time. As a home for Medicaid residents, Medicaid approval is based on having a low to non-existent income and the need for 24-hour nursing care. We welcome to our home those residents with dementia, typically carrying a +/- 95 percent census of residents struggling with some level of dementia. Given the number of residents with some type of dementia, we devote operational funds toward high levels of staffing, ensuring that we have appropriate staff: patient ratios to meet the needs of our elderly residents. We are also one of the few Medicaid facilities in the community that welcomes Medicaid-pending residents (approval can take 30-90 days).

Out of the 1,200 plus nursing homes in Texas, only 8% are non-profit and only 1% are Medicaid only facilities. Sarah Roberts Home is proud to be one of those nonprofits and Medicaid only homes.

All of the residents at the Sarah Roberts French Home are low-income or indigent, ensuring that they have needs at the Home that their families cannot meet, and that are not covered by Medicaid. The Fund to Aid Residents provides funding for those needed items, giving our residents access to equipment, supplies, and other needed items and services that allow them to maintain their health and their dignity.

Examples include medications, wheelchairs, and dental care, to name a few. Funds will be used to purchase the needed items for residents. None of these items are covered under any other program, and without funding for this program, these vulnerable women will not receive what they need to live a basic and decent quality of life.
