Used for	Charlie's Place will utilize the money to renovate the exterior portion of their facility in order to provide their patients and families with a safe, therapeutic and healing outdoor environment to be used daily. This project will include a playground, walking trail, serenity garden, activity areas and a ropes course for trust building activities. This space is vital to the recovery process for healing the mind, body, and spirit.
Benefits	Charlie's Place has dramatically helped thousands of addicts turn their lives around and rebuild broken lives so that they can be productive, contributing members of society. Each year they serve over 1,900 adults which in turn impacts the lives of almost 1,400 children under the age of 18 who are effected by their parents' substance abuse problems. For every $1 spent on treatment, our community saves from $4 to $10 in future services; that translates to a savings of over $12 million dollars per year for South Texas alone. The World Health Organization states, "The global burden of disease attributed to alcohol and illicit drug use amounts to 5.4% of the total burden of disease."
Proposal Description	Charity League, Inc. is a group of 40 women who live in the Texas Coastal Bend area. Each year we select a local charity to be the recipient of our annual fundraising campaign. After a long selection process of many applicants this year, we selected Charlie's Place Recovery Center. Charlie's Place is the largest non-profit residential treatment center in South Texas for adults who have a diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence. It is the only provider of residential substance abuse treatment for indigent clients south of San Antonio. (Many of the patients/clients are homeless.) Over the last 47 years, over 38,000 clients and their families have been served. They provide residential detoxification services, intensive and supportive residential services, family counseling services, and outpatient treatment. These services allow clients to return to the community as productive, contributing members of society. Charlie's Place will utilize the money donated to renovate the exterior portion of their facility in order to provide their clients and families with a safe, therapeutic and healing outdoor environment. This area will be utilized several times daily. On weekends and special occasions family members will be able to spend time together in this great space. This project will include a playground, walking trail, serenity garden, activity areas, and a ropes course for trust building activities. This area is vital to the recovery process of healing the mind, body, and spirit. They operate on the belief that a person cannot successfully maintain sobriety until all three of these aspects of addiction have been healed. Research and experience is used to design their programs. Charlie's Place knows the power of compassion and understanding. They provide residential detoxification, intensive residential counseling (both individual and family counseling), supportive treatment in which they help clients find a job and a place to live before leaving, and continuing outpatient services to maintain the client's sobriety and recovery.
