Additional Information
Used for A gift of $15,000 from the Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation will be used to invest in our mission, because all children deserve to live a normal, happy life. At St. Jude, we want to give all children this hope for the future. It is only because of our generous donors that our scientists are able to continue their lifesaving research and our doctors are able to provide the best clinical care for the children.
Benefits We are an international organization, and our patients come from all 50 states and across the world. Housing, transportation, schooling and psychological support are only a few of the services we provide to our patients, their parents and siblings. St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world.
Proposal Description "St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and treatment of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Ranked the No. 1 pediatric cancer hospital by Parents magazine and the No. 1 children’s cancer hospital by U.S. News & World Report, St. Jude is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children.

Research efforts are directed at understanding the molecular, genetic and chemical bases of catastrophic diseases in children; identifying cures for such diseases; and promoting their prevention. Research is focused specifically on cancers, some acquired and inherited immunodeficiencies, sickle cell disease, infectious diseases and genetic disorders.

About 5,700 patients are seen at St. Jude yearly, most of whom are treated on a continuing outpatient basis as part of ongoing research programs. The hospital also has 78 beds for patients requiring hospitalization during treatment. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and from around the world.

St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. We also provide services to patients and families that are not readily available at other hospitals. We provide housing, travel, food, and support services for families, all at no charge. We even have an onsite school for our children who come to us from outside the Memphis area. These services support our philosophy of providing family centered care. We are currenty treating 130 children from Texas.
